When Amalia Hernández founded Ballet Folklórico de Mexico in 1952, she soon became one of her country’s most celebrated cultural representatives for her fascinating choreography that reinvigorated traditional Mexican dance and folklore.

Ahead of the Ballet’s performance with the LA Phil at the Hollywood Bowl in July 2024, general director Salvador López López and artistic director Viviana Basanta sat down with their longtime collaborator, conductor Carlos Miguel Prieto, to share a few highlights of Hernández’s artistry and ongoing legacy.
